"Breakthroughs" is the third - and finally - final book of Harry Turtledove's "The Great War" trilogy. To recap where we are in this series: the trilogy is an outgrowth of a single book: "How Few Remain". This book really made me want to read the trilogy because the premise and characters; especially General Custer; were wonderfully drawn.

Thus, in 1917, the North and its ally, Germany, battle a Confederacy supported by Britain and France. Russia, present in the real WWI but absent from Turtledove's American equation, is represented by the South.
